Haldi ceremony photography Leeds

This was one of those days where you think… my job is the best.

In 2023 I was in India and photographed holi festival (a hindu festival where people throw colorued powders, dance, and drench each other in water in the streets), it was one of the most extraordinary things I’ve photographed! So when Keertana & Tom said they were bringing the colour to their haldi, I was super excited and immediately ordered protective plastic wallets for my cameras.

Keertana & Tom’s wedding fused their Indian & Scottish heritages together. You’ll see when I make my next post of their wedding day at Wharfedale Grange, how fantastically the two cultures came together.

The celebrations started in Ilkley at Tom’s parent’s beautiful home. It was only five minutes into the event that Tom had already had his shoes stolen by Keertana’s brother, all part of a fun tradition called Joota Chupai where the bride’s family can earn a playful ransom from the groom to get his shoes back (cough up Tom!)

On came the turmeric facial smearing (to bless them and cleanse the skin before the wedding) and of course the massive holi powder and water fight! Having experienced the chaos before, I was right in the thick of the action with my cameras and loved every second capturing the explosively of the action and of course, my favourite, all the colour.

After a mammoth clean up and a blessing from the parents, all 180 guests were treated to some classic Indian dishes, including a delightful dosa station, the best! An early night for all with an early start the next morning at Wharfedale.

I made sure the powder was out of my ears, dusted off the cameras, and watch this space for the next incredible day!

Now go see Keertana & Tom’s second day of celebrations of their Scottish Indian wedding at Wharfedale Grange here!
